AUTHOR VISITS

I love meeting readers, teachers and librarians. As a qualified teacher, I'm a confident speaker and workshop leader, and I'm also fully DBS checked – in short, I feel at home working in schools!

As a guide, my books and their themes are ideal for readers between 11-16 years (Key Stages 3-4) but I'm happy to adapt my sessions to meet the needs of your learners. I can offer author talks, assemblies, Q&A sessions and creative workshops - or a combination of these – and you can book me for a half-day or full-day, depending on your location. My rates are very reasonable, and if you let me know your requirements, I'm happy to give you an no-obligation quote.

SESSIONS FOR SCHOOLS

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS

I can run a creative writing workshop on any subject you like, and in consultation with you, I can tailor activities to the needs and abilities of your students. I'm happy to work with a whole class (max 30 pupils) or with a small group.

Popular workshop themes linked to my own books include How to Write a Retelling, and Supernatural Thriller Writing, while writers of all ages and abilities enjoy my Story Idea Generation workshop.

A typical author talk might cover my childhood author dreams, my route to publication, my life as a working author, some writing hints and tips, and my background working in fashion and photography. Depending on your students, I am also happy to talk in depth about the plots and themes of my books, which include the following subjects: the pursuit of perfection, influence and social media, and the need for authenticity (Mirror Me) and the power of music, obsessive fandoms and toxic masculinity (The Last Thing You'll Hear)

BOOK SALES AND SIGNINGS

All authors like to get their stories into readers' hands - so I would appreciate the opportunity to sell my books on a visit! I can bring my own stock or introduce you to a local indie bookshop to facilitate this, if you prefer. Books can be pre-ordered or purchased on the day, and I'm always happy to sign and dedicate them for your students. There is never any pressure to buy as I understand that not every student can afford to do so - for this reason, I will donate a copy of one of my books to your school library for every ten books sold.

"Jan's visit was so much fun! Her insights into the fashion world had pupils captivated from the moment she began and her honesty and authenticity lend real weight to her writing advice. Jan navigates a breadth of sensitive but vital topics with care and confidence. Pupil feedback was glowing, and her talks supported our drive to foster a positive culture of reading for pleasure whilst inspiring and empowering our young people as writers. A powerful and engaging event, and a highlight in our calendar - highly recommended!"
